  • Auchindoun Castle – 15th‑century hilltop ruin. 2.5 miles from Dufftown off the A941; 10‑min uphill walk from the car park. Free, open 24/7. Sturdy footwear essential.

  • Findlater Castle – Dramatic 13th‑century cliff‑top ruin near Cullen (AB45 2UD). 10–15 min walk from car park. On the route: the Findlater Doocot – a restored 16th‑century beehive dovecot (path branches off the main coastal path). Free, open 24/7. Path is steep and can be slippery – take care.

  • Ballindalloch Castle Gardens – “Pearl of the North”. Formal gardens, woodland walks, riverside paths, children’s play area, picnic spots, Courtyard Café and Gift Shop. Address: Ballindalloch, Banffshire, AB37 9AX. Open Sunday–Thursday, 10am–5pm (last admission 4pm). Closed Friday and Saturday. Grounds‑only tickets available.

COASTAL WALKS, BEACHES & NATURE

  • Cullen to Bow Fiddle Rock Walk – Spectacular 4.4‑mile coastal loop (2–3 hours). Starts in Cullen and follows the beach to Portknockie with the Bow Fiddle Rock sea cliff. Good paths, some paved sections, sandy beach stretches.

  • Findhorn Village & Beach – Charming fishing village with a long sandy beach and Findhorn Bay nature reserve. Look out for seals, dolphins and ospreys. Don’t miss the Findhorn Heritage Centre and the historic Icehouse.

  • Lossiemouth Beach – Two beaches in one:
    East Beach: 7 miles of golden sand, surfing, best view from Prospect Terrace. Free parking at Gregory Place.
    West Beach: rugged, with rock pools, cliffs, Covesea Lighthouse, and great sunsets. Parking behind Moray Golf Club.
    Birdwatching tip: the River Lossie Estuary (east end of the village) is a sheltered spot for Greylag/Canada Geese, Herons, Goosander, Oystercatcher and Redshank. Osprey can be seen at dawn/dusk. Park near Lossiemouth Bay Caravan Park and walk east along the southern shoreline, or cross the bridge to the dunes.

  • Lynn Falls (Aberlour) – A picturesque woodland waterfall right on your doorstep. 10–20 minute walk from Aberlour Distillery / the cemetery at the end of High Street. Well‑maintained path (can be muddy – boots/wellies recommended). Staircase leads to the top of the falls. Connects to the Speyside Way.

  • Findhorn Foundation (The Park Ecovillage) – Internationally renowned spiritual community and ecovillage focused on sustainability. Workshops, retreats, or simply exploring the gardens and eco‑architecture.

  • Scalan Seminary – Remote 18th‑century secret Catholic seminary, built in 1767 to look like a farmhouse. Includes two restored mills with a waterwheel. Located in the Braes of Glenlivet. GPS: 57.25970, -3.25048. Free entry.

  • Glenlivet Distillery – World‑famous distillery near Minmore. The visitor centre includes a café – ideal to pair with a visit to Scalan Seminary.

  • Knockando Woolmill – Working Category A listed mill, operating since 1784. See historic looms in action and buy quality woollen goods. Address: Knockando, Nr Aberlour, AB38 7RP. Open Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm. Also on site: Red Roof Coffee Shop (home baking, excellent coffee, light lunches) and pretty gardens redesigned by BBC2’s Beechgrove Garden team.

  • Lecht Lead Mine – Former iron (1730–1737) and manganese (1841–1846) mine. Short, easy 1‑mile walk (30 minutes) from the Well of the Lecht parking area. Restored rubble‑built building with information boards. Grid ref: NJ234152.

  • Tomintoul Bird Hide – One of north‑east Scotland’s best breeding areas for waders. Spot Curlew, Lapwing (Peesies), Oystercatcher, Snipe and Redshank. Glenlivet Estate, Tomintoul.

HILLWALKING & SCENIC WALKS

  • Ben Rinnes – Moray’s dominant summit. 7.5km round trip, 541m ascent, 3–4 hours. 360‑degree views on a clear day. Start at the parking area on a minor road north of the B9009 (Grid Ref: NJ284359).

  • The Speyside Way – 137km trail from Buckie to Newtonmore. Local sections: Craigellachie to Ballindalloch (12.2 miles) passes Aberlour Distillery and Ballindalloch Castle; Fochabers to Craigellachie (12.7 miles) features woodland paths and the historic Craigellachie Bridge.

  • Logie Steading & Randolph’s Leap – Riverside walk to a spectacular gorge where the River Findhorn squeezes through a narrow ravine. 4km circuit, about 1 hour. Address: Logie Steading, off the B9007 south of Forres, IV36 2QG. On‑site parking and farm shops.

  • Victoria Bridge Circular Walk (vigorous dog walk) – Cross Victoria Bridge over the River Spey and return through Easter Elchies. An excellent round route on the other side of the river – perfect for energetic dogs.

HERITAGE RAILWAY

  • Keith & Dufftown Railway (“The Whisky Line”) – Britain’s most northerly heritage railway. 11 miles from Dufftown to Keith. Online bookings can be made up to 2 hours before departure; call Dufftown on 01340 821181 for later bookings. Children under 5 travel free; child fare up to age 16. Well‑behaved dogs welcome in Standard Class.

  • Elchies Farm Shop – Small family farm with around 200 goats, 100 sheep, alpacas and hens. 24/7 farm shop selling local produce. Near Archiestown.

BEACH SAUNAS

  • Cullen Beach – Sauna At The Kings: wood‑fired barrel sauna with sea views, up to 8 people. Public sessions £15 per hour. Advance booking essential. Phone: 07493 984 460.

  • Lossiemouth (Covesea Lighthouse) – The Steamie: a new “wild sauna” at West Beach, inspired by Scandinavian wellness. Check their Facebook page for opening updates and bookings.

  • Findhorn East Beach – Watershed Sauna: wood‑fired sauna in a vintage horseshoe box. Communal 60‑minute sessions £15 per person; private hire £90 for up to 6 people. No children under 16. Book in advance online.

Sauna tips: all require advance booking – they are very popular. Bring swimwear, towel and flip‑flops. Most saunas encourage a cold sea plunge afterwards – exhilarating! Check tide times and weather before you go.

SCENIC DRIVES

  • Cabrach Road & Lecht Road – These routes offer views into desolate, dramatic landscapes of vast moorland, rolling hills and remote emptiness. Perfect for guests who simply enjoy driving through wild scenery.

SECTION 2: SUGGESTED DAY TRIP ITINERARIES


ROUTE 1 – WILD COASTAL EXPLORER (East / North)
Theme: cliff‑top castles, sea arch, beach sauna and birdwatching.

Morning: Drive 40 minutes to Cullen. Walk the Cullen to Bow Fiddle Rock coastal path (4.4 miles, 2–3 hours). Detour to Findlater Castle and the Findlater Doocot en route.
Sauna stop: Sauna At The Kings on Cullen Beach – book ahead (£15/hour).
Lunch: Fish and chips or seafood chowder in Cullen.
Afternoon: Drive 40 minutes to Lossiemouth Beach. Explore East Beach and West Beach. For birdwatching, head to the River Lossie Estuary – park near Lossiemouth Bay Caravan Park and walk east along the shoreline. Check if The Steamie sauna at the lighthouse is open.
Return: A941 back to Aberlour (35 minutes).

ROUTE 2 – HEART OF SPEYSIDE (East / close to home)
Theme: castle gardens, woolmill, heritage railway and local produce.

Morning: Drive 10 minutes to Dufftown. Coffee at Beinn – Coffee & Books. Visit Auchindoun Castle (hilltop ruin).
Late morning: Drive 15 minutes to Ballindalloch Castle Gardens. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Open Sunday–Thursday only – closed Friday and Saturday.
Lunch: Courtyard Café at Ballindalloch, or drive to Knockando Woolmill for the Red Roof Coffee Shop (home baking) and explore their pretty gardens.
Afternoon: Visit Knockando Woolmill (Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm). Alternatively, ride the Keith & Dufftown Railway (book online in advance).
Farm shops: stop at Netherton (weekend hours) or Elchies (24/7) for local meat and produce.
Return: A95 back to Aberlour.

ROUTE 3 – FINDHORN BAY, GORGE & BEACH SAUNA (Northwest)
Theme: eco‑village, wild bay, riverside gorge and seaside wellness.

Morning: Drive 45–50 minutes to Findhorn Village. Stroll the beach and bay, visit the Findhorn Heritage Centre and Icehouse, then explore the Findhorn Foundation (The Park Ecovillage).
Sauna stop: Watershed Sauna at Findhorn East Beach – book in advance at watershedsauna.com. Communal 60‑minute sessions £15 per person. No under‑16s.
Lunch: Café lunch in Findhorn village (try The Kimberley Inn).
Afternoon: Drive 20 minutes south to Logie Steading. Walk to Randolph’s Leap (4km loop, 1–1.5 hours) – a spectacular river gorge. Browse the farm shops on site.
Return: B9007 and A95 back to Aberlour (40 minutes).

ROUTE 4 – HIGHLAND ADVENTURE (South / remote)
Theme: summit views, secret seminary, distillery café, bird hide and lead mine.

Morning (early start): Drive 10–15 minutes to the Ben Rinnes car park. Summit hike (7.5km round trip, 541m ascent, 3–4 hours) – panoramic views on a clear day.
Lunch: Pack a picnic – enjoy at the summit or at a roadside spot.
Afternoon options (all in the Glenlivet / Lecht area):

  • Scalan Seminary – remote 18th‑century secret seminary (GPS: 57.25970, -3.25048).

  • Glenlivet Distillery – visitor centre with a café for refreshments.

  • Tomintoul Bird Hide – spot Curlew, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Snipe and Redshank.

  • Lecht Lead Mine – short 1‑mile easy walk (30 minutes) from the Well of the Lecht parking.
    Scenic drive: the Cabrach Road and Lecht Road offer wild, desolate moorland views.
    Return: 30–40 minutes back to Aberlour.

ROUTE 5 – ABERLOUR LOCAL DAY (No car needed)
Theme: waterfall, Speyside Way, riverside circular walk.

Morning: Walk to Lynn Falls – 10–20 minutes from Aberlour Distillery / the cemetery. Picturesque woodland waterfall with a staircase to the top.
Lunch: Spey Larder deli in Aberlour, or take a picnic to the falls.
Afternoon: Victoria Bridge circular – cross Victoria Bridge over the River Spey and return through Easter Elchies. A vigorous walk, excellent for energetic dogs.
Alternative: join the Speyside Way from Aberlour and walk as far as you like before turning back.

FINAL NOTES FOR GUESTS

  • Ballindalloch Castle Gardens are closed on Friday and Saturday – plan accordingly.

  • All beach saunas require advance booking – do not simply turn up.

  • Scottish weather is changeable. For any outdoor activities, pack waterproof jackets and sturdy walking boots.

  • For dog walking: the Victoria Bridge circular is excellent. The Lynn Falls path can be muddy – please carry dog waste until you reach the bins on High Street.
